My quest to regain my good health and prevent future disease inspired me to become a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner.

The food service industry, like so many other professions, can be brutal.  Long hours, high stress levels, and an abundance of unhealthy foods caused me to develop a number of significant health issues, including weight gain, chronic elevated stress hormones, and a higher risk of diabetes and heart disease.   My family history includes neurological disease, heart issues, and arthritis.

What is Nutritional Therapy?

Nutritional therapy is an individualized approach to wellness and disease prevention through a traditional diet based on whole, unprocessed, nutrient-dense foods, proper supplementation, and lifestyle changes.  Every person has different health issues and nutritional needs, and no one diet plan will work for everyone.  I work extensively with each client to find the best ways to address their individual concerns.

I believe what we choose to eat is the cornerstone of our health, and in making those choices we have the power to determine whether we live vital and healthy lives or fall into disease.  I can help you to discover the most nourishing diet for you and help you to take back the power for your own health.

Initial Consultation

The free initial consultation is a chance for you to tell me about the health issues you'd like to address.  We'll talk about where you are and where you'd like to go.  We'll discuss your needs and my philosophy, as well as costs and payment options.  We will then decide if we want to work together.

Nutritional therapy is a process of discovery and trial and error.  It is difficult to see results from just one appointment, so I work in packages of three or six months.  After the free consultation we will have in person appointments every two weeks, with email availability between the meetings.

NAQ

The Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire, or NAQ, is a very powerful tool to help pinpoint nutritional needs and deficiencies.  There are over 300 specific questions that will help me to determine how to best balance your nutritional plan.

 
Food Journals

Throughout our work together, I will ask you to keep detailed food journals regularly.  This is a wonderful tool for determining a starting point for making incremental dietary changes, and also provides a way to track your progress.

 
Functional Evaluation

The functional evaluation is a hands-on session in which I use a variety of tests such as manipulation of pressure points on your body, taste tests, and blood pressure tests to ask your body direct questions about how it's functioning and whether your diet is missing essential nutrients.

 
Pantry Purge

This is a very revealing practice where we actually go through your refrigerator and cupboards to eliminate any foods that don't support your health.  We then go on a guided shopping trip to replace the discarded foods with healthful alternatives.

 
Educational Shopping Trips

Grocery shopping can be a landmine of temptation to make poor food choices.  I will teach you how to navigate the grocery store or co-op to find real, nutrient dense, whole foods, and how to avoid the imposters.

 
Supplements

Sometimes the best way to correct a serious lack of a specific nutrient, whether it be a vitamin, mineral, or essential fat, is to use higher doses of that nutrient than can be obtained through diet alone.  Supplements can be a way to see results more quickly than we could do without them.  Nutritional therapy is a way to pinpoint exactly what nutrients you need and how much, taking the guesswork out of supplementation.

About 10 years ago, I had surgery which resulted in the loss of 10 pounds, which is bad for me as I have been underweight.  Nothing seemed to help in my effort to regain those ten pounds. I also had issues with blood sugar and cholesterol.  Then, I began working with Amy and changed the diet drastically. In some ways, it seemed I was returning to the diet we had on the farm when I was growing up. Anyway, change was slow, but persistent.  Amy told me to be patient.  Last year, the real change began as my weight began to change almost daily. The other problem was my issue of stomach pain. The new diet really helped the pain go away, and that is no longer a problem.   In addition, my improved health makes my doctor smile.  What a relief! I am still following my diet format and am now nearing the suggested weight for my body size, and I am 4 pounds over my lifetime weight.  Hurray!
